I can swim further because the sea is (usually) a little calmer, so I feel fit and healthy. And it’s still quiet. I can take my time, sit on the rocks with a thermos of hot chocolate, and write. I write about what crossed my mind as I swam, maybe something from the news, or I write in response to what’s just crossed my path—cormorants will fly low over swimmers—or I might have swum above a starfish or a soft-mouthed mullet, or been stroked by kelp.
