This is the season of metaphor. Maybe it’s the slanting, soft light. How joy, loss and melancholy combine in weeks of red, yellow and gold leaves. A feeling the year is coming to a close in a final, urgent burst of activity. We want to make the most of every moment before the darker days arrive.

Or perhaps, as Rev Lucy Winkett said on the radio earlier this week, We’re all longing to be haunted.
