These are the weeks that lead up to the winter solstice, the longest night. Misty mornings, pale and silvery sky, unmistakable December sunlight late in the morning, which seems to come from a great distance. This is weather that makes us turn inwards, to look for light and energy from reflections, memories and ideas.
I’ve been sleeping deeply, the night filled with strange dreams, forgotten voices and reminders of the past. Then I wake very early, unsure of the time or day, anxious, half-dreaming. I know many artists rely on these moments to inform their work, so I’ve been curious if I can find a place for them in my writing, too.
