I’m writing about my weekly creative adventures. They’re inspired by Julia Cameron’s book The Artist’s Way. “An Artist Date is a tool for attention. A solo expedition to do something that enchants or interests you.” These dates, I hope, are a way to replenish my energy, gather new ideas, feel braver in the world.

My nine-year-old niece bought me a Lego typewriter for my birthday in February and one afternoon, in the warm, springtime light, I built it.
The typewriter had a moving keyboard, a sheet of paper and four flowers growing from the carriage. “Fill any room with colour,” the instructions say. Several reviews on the Lego website describe it as nostalgic and whimsical. One calls it “perfect on a bookshelf or desk.” Despite being so glad about this sweet gift, wrapped in robot paper, months had passed without my feeling compelled to put it together.
But it was the weekend and the weather was lovely, so I made a pot of tea, slid open the living room window, set out the table with the Lego box.
