It’s dark. I’m up early and the sky is black. I light a candle and watch the flame dance, enjoy the rose scent rising. A quiet pause before the day begins. The first day of December and the first day of winter in the meteorological calendar.

Outside, time hasn’t halted. The candle flickers while a bin lorry heaves up the road and voices yell. Someone drags a large, awkward suitcase along the pavement. A bus packed with passengers appears, wheezes its doors open, and moves on again.

City life. There’s energy in the morning and not only in this tiny corner of my home.
